Thank you for visiting my website. My name is Mark Smith and reside in Stevensville, Michigan with my wife and two children. I always been interested in Architecture; however, chose to work in the family business staving off an Architectural career until later in life.

Smith Lumber is located in Hartford, Michigan and celebrated its 100th year in 2008. I worked my way up the company ladder from cleaning toilets and sweeping the drive-thru lumber allies, as a kid, to company President. The business became very diversified after I took over the reins adding design and construction services as well as manufacturing backyard storage barns.

A poor economy in the middle to late 1990’s was affecting home construction, especially in Southwest Michigan, which eventually left no new homebuilders or new home construction in Hartford. Seeing an opportunity, I started Smith Homes, in 1997, as a design build construction company specializing in speculation housing and government subsidized homes then eventually custom homes. I designed, engineered, and drew all the construction company’s house plans utilizing VectorWorks software. I earned my Michigan Residential Builders license in 1999 and spent several years in the field building homes and garages.

The stock market mess in 2007 fueled my decision to make a career change and leave the company business in my brother’s hands—after 30 years—one of the toughest decisions in my life. I enrolled in Andrews University, Berrien Springs Michigan and received a Masters in Architecture degree (summa cum laude) in only 4-1/2 years and earned the AIA’s Henry Adams certificate of merit for being the second-highest ranking student in my graduating class. My final studio class at Andrews received the 2012 CNU Charter Award, Grand Prize, in the academic division for outstanding urban design.

Since graduation, I have earned my LEED Green Associate certificate. I'm currently employed at Nehil-Sivak Structural Engineers in Kalamazoo, MI. I also do contract work for ADL Architects in Berrien Springs, which specializes in hotels, apartment complex's, and church projects. Not wanting to shy away from residential construction, I do design a select few custom homes as time allows. I utilize (and own) Revit, Autocad, and Bluebeam software at both firms.

Future goals include: design a 50% more efficient home at no addition cost, an economically affordable net-zero—carbon neutral home, become a Registered Architect, and a LEED-AP-NC.

I volunteer as President and Field Maintenance coordinator for Lakeshore Youth Soccer League, coach middle school soccer for Lakeshore and youth soccer for Lakeshore Youth Soccer League. I am the committee leader for the Rockey Weed Sports Complex expansion, and also am a soccer referee.

Loves: traditional architecture, craftsman era homes, New urbanism (actually any good urbanism), and sustainable design.

I have been interested in Architecture since my boyhood days; however, because of my families business—a lumberyard—I never really got a chance to pursue my dream until later in my career.
